This was an overnight stay starting from the Paddy Creek Campground, and going southwest. We came across a really nice place to camp about 0.8 mile from the start; however, we decided to go ahead and hike for a while and come back if we couldn’t find anything better. I was not up to hiking more than a few miles, so this worked out really well.
This was our second overnight stay to Paddy Creek Wilderness. Almost 1 year prior to the day, we started at the Roby Lake trailhead and did the northern loop with the cheater connector to the south loop. It was really colorful that time. This time was gorgeous; however, the colors were not quite at their peak.
If I had to pick between the two, I thought this was pretty but there were some jaw-dropping areas starting at Roby Lake. They both had their advantages.
Eventually I would like to do a 3-day, 2-night trip to Paddy Creek.
We didn’t come across any horses this time; however, by the amount of horse shit on the trail, it is no doubt a popular place to ride horses. We did pass several people that were out walking their dogs — most likely staying at the Paddy Creek Campground.
The first creek crossing did have some potable water, but it is fairly close to the campground. After that, we did not come across water.
The next morning, we decided to hike north east from the campground to check out the scenic overlook. If this is your only purpose, I would not waste my time. It was a lot of effort for very little views. If it is part of your hike, its nice but its not worth a sole hike.
Paddy Creek Wilderness is part of Mark Twain National Forest. After my second trip here, it will continue to be on my favorites list!
