I recently discovered Gaia GPS in the app store for my Iphone/Ipad. I’ve not used it for hiking yet; however, I have drawn a route and walked around to test it out. I did a lot of research on an app for my phone as I’ve grown out of using AllTrails. It seems that AllTrails just isn’t reliable enough. It has its advantages, like the fact that it is free and it is more of a community and also great for finding trails; but it is just so darn cumbersome. I have even upgraded to the pro version of AllTrails and dislike it more now. Sure you can make your own routes but to use them when you’re hiking is very cumbersome. We tried it last weekend on our trip to Swan Creek. With so many trails there, I had drawn out our route ahead of time; however to actually see your route, you have to switch from the tracking screen to the route screen and it doesn’t show you the track onto of the route as they are in two separate places, causing us to get lost a couple of times.
What I’m looking for is the ability to draw the route I want to go on top of the trail and then my progress on top of that route. I would also like to see all of the trails available in addition. It looks like Gaia will fit that bill. The cost is $20.00, but it has so many different maps available. It’s a simple interface and the offline mode worked well when I tried it. I will report back as I’ve used it more.
